Either these are clever spambots, or regular people who are trying to make money or something. It’s weird, I haven’t seen them so legit anywhere else.

I don’t want to ban the users until they go overboard.

*Begins talking in a gravely voice*

Everyone. Gather around the campfire, I have a story I feel I should tell you. This story takes place during a better time, a much more innocent time. I, only a youngun’, had joined a forum, just like this one, where we could talk about our favorite things. We laughed together, cried together, we fought with each other…But it was alright, for we knew, that we still cared about each other. Then one day, everything changed, it was subtle at first, only one spam poster had signed up. But then that one became two, two became four, four became fourty. Before we knew it, we were overrun…Know matter what we tried, every attempt to stop them just fell to pieces. Eventually, it became so much of a nuisance, that people stopped posting.

I tried to check back on the site a while back, unfortunately, it doesn’t even exist now. I know that there isn’t anything I could’ve done to save it, but I can use that experience to warn other, newer forums that I join. It doesn’t matter how you stop them, send ‘em a pm telling them that if they don’t start posting something topical then ban them. Set up one of those things during registration where you have to enter the letters you see in a white little box…You know the ones I’m talking about. However you do it, you HAVE to stop them, before it’s too late. I will NOT see another site taken down by SPAMBOTS! NOT THIS SITE, NOT AGAIN!

Also…*high five*...I can’t leave ya’ hanging.

Thank you, I try my best.

But seriously, that did happen. I was part of a forum, it was overrun by spambots who would post things for random products, everyone got annoyed so we eventually just left. I mean, right now, they aren’t doing TOO much harm, but I would rather not take any chances.

I have no clue how to stop them.  I don’t run the site from the back end… deleting the posts is pretty futile.

They haven’t come back. It may be futile, but at least it cleans the place up a bit. If we gave up on futile cleaning, there’d be dust everywhere, haha.

oh yeah delete them in here.  I am mainly referring to certain blog posts they have chosen where tons of new ones go up every day.

My plan at the moment is to delete all spam posts, send a first and only warning to the “user” with that original deletion, and then delete the user for any subsequent violations. There are too many non-active users with ad links in their profiles to go through and clean them all up, so for now I am just addressing ones who actually post things.

I’m just glad to see that something is being done about it, and that you’re nipping it in the bud while the problem is still “tame”.

Hopefully it won’t get too bad. It’s really weird that it’s happening.

I wasn’t expecting this to happen, but I’m not suprised that it did. Does that make sense?

For blog and comic comments, maybe there needs to be a captcha system put in.

Update: I’m crazy-busy in life so not on here all the time any more, but I do deal with any/all spam reports sent my way. I’ve moved to a “No Strikes” system, so basically, don’t post any dumb stuff that looks like spam, because if someone reports it, or I come across it, I’ma just delete it.

Not that any of you fine folk would post anything that didn’t sound like it came from a human. smile
